Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the eldest of six children. Her father's love of music and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy at the age of a girl. As young as four year old, she was certain that she was going to be a star in the singing world. The talent she developed was cultivated through her participation in the church choir. Following her win in a talent show on television when she was 15 years old, she began appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of 15. Nancy graduated high school at the age of 17 and then attended the Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a entire year. After that, she left to pursue a job as a professional musician. The first album she recorded was with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she toured from 1956 to 1958. While in the group Nancy made her first recording with Dot Records. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she move to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959 Nancy made the move to The Big Town. Within a couple of weeks after, her manager saw her performance and decided to hire her. The contract was signed by Capitol Records in the year 1960. The year was 1960 when she made her debut with. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B in favor of music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley led her to the top and she had her breakout smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. Her first job was at New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's top club.
